Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Of the one million or more deaths from malaria that occur worldwide each year, most are in African children under the age of five. The vast majority of malaria deaths occur in Africa, south of the Sahara, where malaria also presents major obstacles to social and economic development. Antimalarial drugs, when used as monotherapies (a single drug used as a stand alone treatment), are rapidly losing their effectiveness. Malarial infection during pregnancy is a major public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. Mosquito nets, if properly used and maintained, can provide a physical barrier to hungry mosquitoes. If treated with insecticide, the effectiveness of nets is greatly improved.
