Description
The United Nations Children's Fund (or UNICEF) was created by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 1946, to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations System and its name was shortened from the original United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund but it has continued to be known by the popular acronym based on this old name. Headquartered in New York City, UNICEF provides long-term humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

World Day Against Child Labour, celebrated on 12 June, this year highlights the continuing challenges to eliminating the worst forms of child labour, with a focus on exploitation of girls. Here is a related story. KIPUSHI, Democratic Republic of Congo, 12 June 2009 Covered in powder, Sylvian, 2, sits alongside his mother, pounding rocks with a mallet in an ore heap in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rocks, dust and sun: This is the only life Sylvian has known. According to Article 32 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have the right to be protected from economic exploitation. Through the efforts of Group One, a UNICEF-supported Belgian non-governmental organization, this is starting to happen in DR Congo. Group One and UNICEF are working to remove children from the hazardous working conditions in the quarry and get them back to school. "One of the things we need to do is try to take these children out of this economy," says Pierrette Vu Thi. "It means working on building social protection systems and helping these children's families by giving them the means to send the children to school." Jacqueline, mère de deux enfants, fait partie des 500 000 camerounaises vivant avec le VIH. Giani, son aîné âgé de cinq ans, est lui aussi séropositif. Il est suivi à la fondation Chantal Biya à Yaoundé, un hôpital pédiatrique qui avec le support de l'UNICEF et d'autres partenaires, fournit des soins gratuits aux enfants vivant avec le VIH. Dans la plupart des pays d'Afrique subsaharienne, ce sont les femmes qui portent le fardeau de la pandémie du VIH. Pas seulement parce qu'elles courent un risque plus important d'être infectées mais aussi parce qu'elles ont la responsabilité de prendre soin de leurs enfants et de leur famille. Sur les 5,1 % de personnes infectées par le VIH au Cameroun, 60 % sont des femmes. A côté de la nécessité d'accélérer la prise en charge pédiatrique du VIH, d'intensifier la prévention de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant, l'énorme challenge pour le pays est l'éducation sur la prévention du VIH auprès des nouvelles générations, et spécialement chez les filles. Jeunesse et Solidarité, un club de jeunes qui a son siège à Douala, est une des 500 associations soutenues par l'UNICEF pour informer et conseiller afin de prévenir de nouvelles infections. L'association a démarré en 2000 sur l'initiative d'étudiants; c'est un endroit où les jeunes se retrouvent et peuvent mener des actions, combien importantes, de prévention au VIH.
