Description
Husband and wife team Shirley HAN Ying and Chris Gelken created Ridealist in 2009 to produce short videos to showcase the efforts of grassroots non-profits, community groups and individuals who otherwise would not have ready access to professional media services.

Since then, we have produced more than 30 videos for NPOs in China, Hong Kong, Britain, Kenya and Uganda whose efforts are making a valuable and positive contribution to society. The productions were conducted on an entirely pro-bono, volunteer basis.

However, in order to continue this service, we also need to be sustainable. From mid-June 2013 Ridealist will re-establishing itself as a social enterprise, but with our focus still firmly set on the non-profit sector.

Our goal is to generate enough revenue through paid commissions, to continue our volunteer work for those groups who genuinely have no media budget.

We hope you can support us!

Directed by Shirley Han Ying, this series of seven videos reveal the stories behind each finalist of the WYNG MASTERS AWARD (WMA) 2012. In the final video, Rufina Wu and Stefan Canham explain how the combination of texts, photos and architectural drawings offer a unique perspective into Hong Kong's rooftop communities. Their project - 'Portraits from Above' - was selected as one of the seven finalists of the WMA 2012 and ultimately won the award jointly with another finalist. Rufina Wu is an architect based in Vancouver, while Hamburg-based Stefan Canham has been working freelance on documentary photo and television projects. From December 2007 to February 2008, they were both artists-in-residence at Hong Kong’s Art and Culture Outreach, collaborating together on 'Portraits from Above'. The project won the 5th International Bauhaus Award 2008 and was published by Peperoni Books, Berlin, and MCCM Creations, Hong Kong. It has been exhibited in Asia, Europe, and North America. Over the last decade, Hong Kong’s rapidly widening wealth gap has resulted in an economically unbalanced and socially unequal city. The high level of economic disparity outstrips that of other eminent world cities. Amidst great affluence, 18.1% of Hong Kong’s population lives at subsistence levels. Failure of policy leaves many struggling to achieve a living wage and to maintain their dignity. The WYNG MASTERS AWARD (WMA) for Photography is a non-profit project initiated to spark public awarene...

A dramatic journey from victim to survivor.

This exciting annual event will take place on Sunday 28th Oct 2012 at Tai Po Four-colour Forest Walks. Hong Kong Unison is a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting harmony, equality, and ending discrimination among Hong Kong's ethnic minorities in education and in the workplace. Out of every twenty residents of Hong Kong, there is one ethnic minority living here. Surveys show over 40% of them are suffering from unemployment or unstable job security due to the language barrier and a lack of resources in access to quality Chinese language education. In order to promote racial equality in the territory, Hong Kong Unison, a public charitable institution, organizes an annual hiking event named "Hikathon" to fight for equal education opportunities and quality Chinese education for all Hong Kong residents, especially the ethnic minorities. For more information on Hong Kong Unison, please visit their website at    http://www.unison.org.hk

A low-budget documentary film by Lynn Zhang & Shirley Han Ying about the water crisis in the North China Plain. It depicts the devastating consequences of water scarcity exacerbated by pollution.

The film follows a group of farmers who saw their orchards destroyed by water pollution, and their one-sided struggle against a major corporation and an unsympathetic local government to gain compensation.

Through the stories of the individual villagers and the predictions of local experts, we witness a paradise lost to economic progress, and the consequences of doing too little, too late.

Original dialogue in Chinese with English narration and subtitles.
