El Salvador is the smallest and most densely-populated country in Central America. 90 percent of El Salvador's surface water is contaminated. For those living in poverty--almost half the country's population--safe drinking water is a constant concern. In one area, healthy wells built by Oxfam and local partner Pro Vida, offer an alternative: a source of clean water. "When it floods, the water gets extremely contaminated," explains Oxfam's Karina Copen. "The streams overflow. All that waste goes into the hand-dug wells that are found in most of the homes here." Elvira, age 9, explains, "With this clean water, we do not get stomach aches anymore."
